Man scours tip for $50k jewels

A Brisbane man has begged to scour a rubbish tip after throwing out his wife's jewellery.

The unidentified man hid $50,000 worth of uninsured jewellery in plastic bags ‘to conceal it from thieves’. The collection, including charm bracelets, bangles and pure gold bars was accidentally thrown into the garbage.

The family was moving house and the children were asked to gather up and throw away any rubbish which they dutifully did.  Of course, the jewels went!

I spy with my little eye….

Two alleged burglars are behind bars after being spotted from the air - by the man whose house was being robbed.

Steven Lynn, from Arkansas was in his friend’s Cessna when he spotted two men allegedly breaking into his house. Calling police from his mobile, he described the exact route taken by the robbers as he tracked them from the air.

French farmer advertises against ads

Reuters reports that a French organic farmer has paid 3000 euros ($4200) to hire 25 billboards so he could denounce the evils of advertising.

The giant ads in the town of Agen this week show a human brain stuffed with advertising images with the slogan "Advertising is manipulating you - React!"

Pierre Kung, 56, explained that he was implementing the martial arts technique of ‘using the strength of the adversary to floor him’.

Round and round the garden…

Australia supplies about 50% of the world’s legally-grown opium that’s used to make morphine and other painkillers.

The opium poppies are grown in Tasmania, where – according to Attorney General Lisa Giddings,  wallabies are eating opium poppies and creating crop circles as they hop around ‘as high as a kite’.

Retired Tasmanian poppy farmer Lyndley Chopping also said he had seen strange behaviour from wallabies in his fields.

“They would eat some poppies and go away”, he told ABC News “Then, they’d come back and do their circle work in the paddock”.

Rick Rockliff, speaking for poppy producer Tasmanian Alkaloids, said that other animals had also been spotted ‘acting unusually’ in the poppy fields.

‘There are many stories about sheep eating some poppies after harvesting and they all walk around in circles,’ he said.

One in twenty Australians seeking help turned away

By Ryan Witcombe

Australian community and social service organisations are unable to meet the demand for their services as more people turn to them for help, according to the Australian Community Sector Survey.

The results of the survey – which shows a 12% increase in assistance provided by Australia’s community services and welfare sector - raise questions over Australia’s post-GFC economic recovery.

Office style: pop art to Dickens revisited

La guerre des Post-it (the Post-it wars) aka the Great French Post-it War of 2011 is racing through Europe to pepper thousands of offices with huge, wall and window sized icons made out of coloured post-it notes.

Offices of top tier organisations are adorned with giant composites of Mario, Space Invaders, Pacman, Donald Duck, Marilyn Monroe and Casper the Friendly Ghost.

But in Australia, it seems unlikely to catch on.  Here, mining giant BHP Billiton has issued a Dickensian staff charter that includes the removal of each individual (correctly used) Post-it note from monitors and keyboards at the end of the working day.

More tips for mature age candidates

It’s still not easy for older workers to find a new job. But there are ways you can circumvent the problems by updating your outlook.

Here are some general pointers:

·         Make sure you project yourself as a great listener who is open to innovation and new ideas.

·         Learn to accept that you may no longer be the leader. As a team member, it’s likely your next role may be as a reliable, responsible, pragmatic utility player who gets things done.

·         Show that you are a low-risk hire and not planning to ‘take over’.

·         Be intuitive. There are always ways you can help the team. Find them and do them – without a need for fanfare.

·         Present in the way you feel most confident. If you look good, you’ll feel good (and vice versa) and both mean a good interview and a more promising future.

·         Become tech savvy and open up to ongoing learning

·         If appropriate, you could offer to start as a temp, contractor or consultant.

Petrol price rip off

Have you ever wondered why the price of petrol rises and falls and have you ever had a sense of unease about how it all works?

On Monday unleaded petrol in my local service station was $1.42 per litre. I began to wonder what makes up this price. Why does it vary and how is it connected to the wider world?

Just why is it that the price of petrol shoots up just before long weekends and holidays?

The 5 elements of ‘the Midas touch’

1.     Thumb: Strength of character.

2.     Index finger: Focus, which is also an abbreviation for ‘Follow one course until successful’.

3.     Middle finger: Brand, that is, what you stand for.

4.     Ring finger: Relationships - surround yourself with good people and remember that you can't do a good deal with bad partners

5.     Little finger: Little things count. That is, do the little things that others don't in order to set yourself apart.
