You lose some – you win some
According to the
Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, 18 employees at an Ottawa factory got all the wining numbers
in a $7 million Lotto prize on the same day that 10 of them got retrenched.
Employers, SMART Technologies had decided to lay off about two-thirds of its
300 employees to move operations to Mexico.
Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation confirmed that the
winning ticket was shared by a group from Ottawa, but could not identify them until
the win was ratified.
Positive thinking rules!
Research run by the
Mayo Clinic, indicates that positive thinking is linked to a wide range of
health benefits including:
- Longer
life span
- Less
stress
- Lower
rates of depression
- Increased
resistance to the common cold
- Better
stress management and coping skills
- Lower
risk of cardiovascular disease-related death
- Increased
physical wellbeing
- Better
psychological health
One study of 1,558 older adults found that positive thinking
could also reduce frailty during old age.
Think about this …
There
are two kinds of people, those who do the work and those who take the credit.
Try to be in the first group; there is less
competition there.

organizations to have a good grasp of their company’s financials.
And ‘good
grasp’ means not just being able to read a balance sheet but having the
essential financial acumen to clearly understand what is happening and why.
Without
this, you lay yourself wide open to liability that can damage your

10 simple
tech tips for anyone who trades off their name
By Kirsty
Dunphy
|
|
As a speaker and formerly as a
real estate sales person my name has always been one of my biggest assets.
Now this is not because my name is particularly glamorous, certainly not
because it’s easy to spell, but just simply because that’s how most people
remember me.
I’ve always preferred that
people remember me by my name because that is going to be the one constant
through my life.

Australian
employers ‘hostile to mature age workers’
|
|
Young, old and
everyone in between – Australians of all ages have a right to be treated
fairly and have the same opportunities as everyone else. Age discrimination
is when these opportunities are denied to people for reasons dictated by
their age.
Writing in 2010 for
CareerOne, expert recruitment commentator Kate Southam boldly asserted that
according to a report from the Australian Human Rights Commission report
‘the Australian workplace is hostile to mature age workers.’
Not only that, she
claimed, but employers are ‘denying
those (people) jobs, training and labeling them as high occupational health
& safety risks’.

The business
case for embracing age diversity
|
|
As the baby boomers
retire there is going to be a significant slow down in labour force growth
and this is going to exacerbate current skills shortages.
A survey of 400 businesses
conducted by the Australian Industry Group and Deloitte found that over a
quarter of companies could not find workers to fill vacant positions, and
this is predicted to get worse in the next five years.
Mass exits from the
baby boomer generation (predicted to occur in 2015-2020) could potentially
leave gaping holes in many companies. Despite this skills shortage,
businesses are seemingly still refusing capable applicants on the basis of
age.
