12 Negotiation Tips for People Who Hate Negotiating
|
|
By Jeff
Haden from Business Owners
I hate
negotiating, mostly because a negotiation often feels confrontational and I
tend to shy away from confrontations. But negotiating is a fact of business
life, so (here) are some ways to make your negotiations less painful, more
fun — and most importantly more successful.

In their pursuit to create the Great Australian Resume, too many
job prospectors (you?) tend to overlook the power of a compelling cover
letter.
All too frequently, the cover
letter is an afterthought. You know
you need to have one – you don’t know what to write – so you scrabble
together a predictably boring ‘Dear Sir’ note.
That’s a big mistake. And
here’s why.

Have you
ever stopped to think that because you live and work in an industrialised
society, you personally are adding your (considerable) ‘bit’ to the unsustainable demands the
global community puts on the planet?
Your home and vehicles, technology, travel,
food, clothes, entertainment and so many
more of your ‘things’ all deplete the natural world just by
being. So, it seems reasonable to
help reverse some of this awesome ‘take’ by giving back – even if it’s only
in small increments.

Just
imagine what it would be like…
Down and
desperate you cling fast to the belief that when you knock on the door of the
welfare agency you most respect, they’ll scoop you up with comforting arms

On a typical day in Australia, 59% of people who
make a new request for immediate accommodation from government-funded
specialist homelessness agencies are turned away.

employees in 24 countries using text messages, interactive social
networking tools and – shock horror - phone calls and personal chats in
place of email by that time.

Not necessarily.
Recently, the National Centre for
Education and Training on Addiction at Adelaide's
Flinders University, found almost one in 10
people regularly drink at work in the belief it doesn’t affect their
performance.
But that's a mistake, says research leader Dr Ken Pidd.
Lunchtime and after-work drinks certainly do influence performance. But he also suggested that people
should appreciate that drinking at/after work might also prejudice their
company’s insurance.
Have a few drinks after work and then get into an accident on the
way home - and you may find yourself personally liable for a huge recovery
bill.
‘For a long time workplaces have used alcohol as a morale and
team-building exercise. But they are starting to realise they need to make
sure they do so responsibly.’
